“The woman who challenges herself to invent herself daily displays sublime creativity.” -Maya Angelou
Carol Fielhaber was born and raised in the Bismarck, North Dakota area. She had a desire to make art from a very young age. After high school, she received a Graphic Art Degree from Bismarck State College. She then worked as a graphic designer for KFYR and Myer Broadcasting in Bismarck, ND. She married and lived in South Dakota for 5 years, when she and her husband Bill moved to Minot and have lived there since. Carol received an education and art education degree from Minot State University when her youngest child started school. She taught art in the Minot Public School system but went home to heal from illness that arose. She later spent time as gallery director and art instructor at Minot State University. In 2013 after a life of knowing she would one day create art and many years of waiting and longing, Carol had a vivid and profound revelation that it was time. She found an art workshop 1500 miles from home and immediately signed up. After 5 days that would change her life, Carol came home and has been painting ever since. Carol’s family is most important to her and says they are a large part of what makes her heart beat. She and Bill have 2 children and now 3 grandchildren. Carol works in their family business when she is not making art and is grateful to have the opportunity to be productive in life and the world of art. She appreciates her family and community support. Carol is inspired by and continues to study the era, lives and works of the first artists of impressionism, expressionism, cubism and abstract expressionism movements.
The spirit and purpose at the heart of my work is to encourage not only myself, but others as well as societies, communities and cultures to be empowered to take ownership of and to grow their own experiences that helps them be whole and validated from within. I know that my images, concepts, and perspectives, all come from a woman’s point of view, but I also realize that the struggle to be whole and validated belongs to all of mankind. I want to create art that will inspire the spirit of truth, honesty, and resilience.
My subject matter ranges from figures, feelings, messages to abstractions. I am inspired by life, the feelings that come from experiencing everyday life, nature, good conversation and uplifting events. I use acrylic, and multi-media. When in my studio I feel the excitement of something undiscovered, continually searching concepts, styles and mediums. I draw, paint, paste, scrub and look for happy accidents. I like to write verse around each of my creations and those are usually included in my exhibits. Viewers often speak to me of how they are moved or inspired by my written thoughts expressed and that feeds my own heart. I feel like my art journey has just begun. I learn and change with every stroke of my brush, fingers, charcoal, pen, pencil, and twig…
